Learning Shapes Using the 3 Period Lesson
Today we are learning all about shapes. Lincoln has mastered his 2D shapes and is ready to learn 3D shapes! ⠀
⠀
I wanted to share a little about 3 Period Lessons and how we use it to introduce a new concept to our toddler.⠀Once you have learned the sequence for the 3 period lesson, you can use it to teach almost anything!
The example below will be teaching the circle shape 🟣.
⠀
Period 1: Identification [this is...]⠀
This is a circle 🟣.
Period 3: Recollection [what is this?]⠀
What shape is this? 🟣
⠀
Period 1: Identification [this is...]⠀
This is a circle 🟣.
The first step is to identify the object. If you are able to let the child hold or examine the object, this will aid in getting their attention and interest.
⠀
Period 2: Recognition [show me...]⠀
Can you find an object that is shaped like a circle? 🏀✉⭐⠀
⠀
Period 2: Recognition [show me...]⠀
Can you find an object that is shaped like a circle? 🏀✉⭐⠀
Show me the circle: 🟣🔷🟨🔺💚⠀
The second period is an extension of the first lesson. *Note: this is not the time to ask the child what the item is*.
Depending on the child's age, have 2-5 items that the child can choose from. Ask them, which item is shaped like a circle? Can you place the circle on your head? Or if pointing in a book/cards: Show me the circle.
It is important to make sure your child is able to correctly identify the items before moving on to the next period. If they are unable to master the second period, you can always go back to the first period and identify the object.
Period 3: Recollection [what is this?]⠀
What shape is this? 🟣
This is where you can ask your child the name of the object. What shape am I holding? What shape is on the chalkboard? What shape is this ball?
Please do not push your child to move to this period too quickly. We want our children to succeed and not feel pressured to perform for us. The goal is that the child will master the lessons and gain confidence. Moving to this step too quickly will cause you to have to correct them and therefore break some of their confidence. Every time child masters a skill, they become more confident and eager to learn more!
